All four of the family members reportedly suffered from smoke inhalation. Firefighter Walter Stewart’s three children – all younger than 10 — and his wife succumbed to injuries from Tuesday’s deadly blaze. Stewart's name and service role was identified by the Chicago Fire Fighters Union Local 2, according to the station. NBC Chicago reported the Chicago firefighter was on duty when he heard the initial dispatch of the blaze at his home address.

A locked gate in the rear of the two-story home forced crews to deploy three attack lines. The fire was under control in less than an hour, but crews remained on the scene to search for hotspots. Three other children were in school at the time of the fire, according to the Munster Fire Department release. The State Fire Marshal is investigating, Munster Deputy Fire Chief Dave Strbjak said Tuesday. The driver and parent tried to enter the home several times, the release said, but the smoke was too thick, and the flames were spreading too quickly.
